Community Service Challenge

From the County Extension Office:
Once again we are excited to challenge every 4-H club to collect food items for the Food Finders Food Bank, Inc. and the Tippecanoe County Humane Society. We will also be collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Summertime is a crucial time for these organizations to receive donations and they need our help. As 4-H’ers, we are here to serve and help meet the needs of those in our community. The reward of meeting peoples’ needs is in the time and energy sacrificed to make a difference; it stands by itself. But, to offer some incentive, the 4-H clubs who collect the most amount of food(measured by weight per club member) will receive pizza gift certificates. We will collect all food items at the Junior Leader Meeting on July 10th at 7:00 p.m. in the Home Ec Bldg..
So, take the 4-H Club Challenge and help those in need!

Our Part in Operation Teddy Bear

Calling All Hands!
Faith is asking for her 4-H Club's participation in her Operation Teddy Bear Project. At our next meeting she will provide each of us with cards to write a note to a soldier serving in Iraq. Let's join with her in support of our troops by sending hand-written cards along with the donated bears in her next shipment!

Operation Teddy Bear Earns Recognition

This article is from the Journal & Courier:

Tippecanoe County Girl Recognized for Sending Teddy Bears to Troops
A Tippecanoe County girl received an award for an extra large care package being sent to soldiers in Iraq. Mayflower Mill Elementary 4th grader Faith Killian-Fassnacht was presented with a coin from the Commanding General, which is awarded for excellence. Killian-Fassnacht is being recognized for collecting and sending 700 teddy bears to soldiers in Iraq.
Starting in August, Killian-Fassnacht asked community members to donate new and gently used teddy bears. She said she was surprised by how many bears she was able to collect. The teddy bears are being shipped to soldiers in Iraq. Some will also go to Iraqi civilians. Killian-Fassnacht said she came up with the idea to collect teddy bears one day when she was looking at her own teddy bear collection.
"When I looked at them, it made me think that maybe the soldiers would be happy to get these and it would let them know that we're still thinking about them," Killian-Fassnacht said.
"Well basically when we heard about this project, I wanted to submit a request for an award. On the civilian side, there's very few rewards we can give, for the military to the civilian. Major General Pollmann recognized this with a 2 Star General Coin, which is an extremely rare reward," Staff Sergeant Justin Broadwater said.
Killian-Fassnacht wants to continue collecting teddy bears and plans to send another batch to the soldiers around Easter time.

4-H'ers Soar to New Heights

4-H helps boys and girls explore many exciting opportunities, providing them the chance to discover new areas of interest. This could relate to aerospace, pets, sports, microwave cooking, arts & crafts, photography and much, much more. And these youth (grades 3-12) have fun participating in local 4-H clubs, at the county 4-H Fair, at camps, and in the many other related activities. 4-H provides an opportunity for youth to soar to new heights.
